I am Professor of Structural Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, where I formerly served as Chair of the Civil Engineering B.Sc./M.Sc. Degree Programs. I am the founding Director of the post-graduate Master in Engineering and Integrated Management of Highway Networks, jointly offered with Politecnico di Torino. My research focuses on life-cycle civil engineering, structural reliability and risk analysis, and bridge engineering. I have authored over 400 scientific publications and co-edited several volumes on life-cycle performance and sustainability of structures and infrastructure systems. The methodologies I developed have been applied to the assessment and management of deteriorating structural systems, including RC/PC bridges, cable-stayed bridges, and landmark buildings. I serve as Secretary General and Executive Board Member of the International Association for Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE), and as Executive Committee Member of the International Association for Bridge Maintenance And Safety (IABMAS). I am Associate Editor of the Journal of Structural Engineering (ASCE) and Structure and Infrastructure Engineering (Taylor & Francis), and a member of several international editorial boards and technical committees. I received the ASCE Dan M. Frangopol Medal (2025), the IABMAS Junior Prize (2012), the IABSE Outstanding Paper Award (2007), and IABSE Fellowship (2021), among other honors. I have given keynote and invited lectures at major international conferences and held visiting positions in universities across Europe, the United States, China, Australia, and New Zealand.
